A wee Spanish brogue

I am not a skillful bargain hunter. In fact, I have a useless, if not detrimental talent for looking at a group of fairly similar objects and picking the most expensive one as my favourite. I call it “a great appreciation for the finer things in life.” My dad calls it “being a slave to material possessions.”

In Barcelona, my talent was tested when the Husband and I wandered by the window of a beautiful shop called Lotusse. Even through the glare of the afternoon sun on the window, I could spot the buttery soft leather that only graces the dearest of shoes, and I knew I shouldn’t go in. It had been a very extravagant day of shopping (and a few moments of concern that my suitcase would be overweight), and I’d just vowed not to buy any more stuff. But then the shoes sang their siren song; I was rendered helpless. Here are the enchanting, wee Spanish brogues:

Lotusse has gorgeous shoes, handmade in Spain, and I wish they had an online store, or even just a website, so I could fall in love with more of their shoes and give them more of my money.

The careful hand stitching and lovely craftsmanship makes me imagine an old Spanish shoemaker with a round belly, bent over a long wooden bench in a little village workshop. Most of the day he perches on a stool, working smooth, perfect leather around lasts. Maybe he has a small team of elves to assist, and he passes the shoes off to them to do all the delicate stitching. At lunchtime, when it’s too hot to work, they retire to the cool kitchen of the main house, where the the shoemaker’s wife has laid out a merienda of crusty bread, a rainbow of olives, mild sheep’s milk cheese, a few links of sausage and a hearty red wine. After lunch, they go for siesta, each finding a solitary spot in in the house, and there they nap until the day cools down and it’s time to resume the shoemaking.

Elves and a round-bellied old Spanish man. Those are definitely the people who made my shoes.

Alas, I can’t claim credit for these very clever photos. They’re the handiwork of my lovely friend Xanthe, who is eternally in my good book for helping me organise my apartment last month and more recently, for showing me that the zoom on my camera is not the same thing as the focus. Go figure.

I carry your heart…

…I carry it in my creepy golden claw fingers.

This Yves St Laurent ring is proof that evil and beauty can co-exist in perfect, over-priced harmony. FACT.

This ring is so beautiful I need to go find something soft to faint on. Too bad I don’t actually own this ring. Fainting is ever so inelegant when one’s fingers are unadorned.

Where have you been all my life?

People, I’ve been ever so rubbish and neglectful of my blog. I’m so sorry if you’ve been feeling lonely and like I don’t love you anymore, but that’s simply not true. It’s just that I turned 30 and I’ve been a little distracted by something. “What something?” you might ask. You shall soon find out.

In case turning 30 wasn’t in itself fancy-lady-making enough, my lovely, fabulous, sweet, thoughtful, handsome fiance gave me something that I’ll treasure forever and guard fiercely from the evils of ballpoint pen ink, blue jeans transfer stain and sun damage alike. Please say hello to Victoria, the ostrich leather jewel in the Chloe family crown.

She blasts crazy quantities of awesome into whatever I’m wearing, even if it’s just flannel pyjamas with bunny rabbits on them. When I walk down the street with her, (usually not in bunny rabbit pyjamas), I feel like the coolest girl on the planet who ever lived.

I’m a little afraid to take her on outings just in case I get caught in an unforeseen torrential downpour, or someone touches her with mucky fingers. People in my future, consider yourselves forewarned. Touch my handbag with mucky fingers and you will surely feel my wrath.

Everyone, I’m pleased to introduce Miss Twig Penelope Bikington:

091107_Penelope_Full

She’s a Schwinn Supreme cruiser and was born in China, but shortly after her birth, she moved to Manly. A couple of weeks ago I took the ferry over to adopt her from the Manly Cycles Cruiser Shop and now she lives on my balcony. You may think that’s not the most dignified abode for such a prim lady, but she enjoys the fresh air and the company of my little grapefruit tree.

She takes me to the gym and work most days, and sometimes we just amble around the neighbourhood, I, in a nifty outfit and she, pretty in purple.

Since Penelope moved in, I’ve discovered a new appreciation for my LeSportsac by Tokidoki travel bag. Riding a bike with a handbag (as opposed to a shoulder bag) is pretty awkward but my LeSportsac can scrunch up to neatly fit in the basket, or I can use the long strap to sling it over my shoulder, messenger style. I’ve always thought being a bike messenger would be cool, but somehow I don’t think the bike messengers in the city would take kindly to being joined by a girl wearing a dress riding around on a 7 gear bike with a basket. Snobs.

Here she is having a rest in the park near my house:

This Nicola Finetti Dynasaur is just the neatest little thing. It’s hard to tell how big he is from the photo, but I hope he’s enormous. A statement Dynasaur.

Shoes, glorious shoes

I’ve been trying to work out how to update my summer wardrobe on the cheap. I’m not the biggest trend follower: I don’t buy into those diaper-like harem pants, (I imagine if you tried to run in them, the low crotch would make you trip over just like if you tied your shoelaces together), I don’t really dig baggy, torn up boyfriend jeans rolled tightly at the ankle, and the resurgence of floral dresses worn with Doc Martens reminds me way too much of Alicia Silverstone in all those Aerosmith videos. I find a lot of trends are made for the very young and the very tall and thin, and when we the short and normal try to pull them off, we can end up looking kind of dumpy and kind of silly.

So all the lamenting unflattering clothes aside, I’ve decided that shoes are the perfect way to update my wardrobe without doing a complete overhaul. Shoes are always good to us women. No matter how much weight we lose or gain, our shoes always fit. Trying on a pair of shoes will never make you regret the Big Mac you ate for lunch, or make the change room mirrors reflect back at you in that devastatingly hideous way.

If the shapes in your wardrobe are fairly classic, then the best way to update is with an edgy pair of shoes. A good pair of shoes can make a dress that’s a bit too pretty look chic and fashion forward. Equally, a bad pair of shoes can make an amazing designer dress look rubbish. Sorry Sandra Bullock, but you need to fire your stylist. (I originally had the actual photo posted, but it offended me so much every time I opened the blog that I had to replace it with a link) As we see from the Sandra Bullock exhibit, a bad pair of shoes can destroy an outfit. Bad hair doesn’t help either.

Recently I was a bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding. Our dresses were sleeveless, high-waisted chocolate brown chiffon that fell below the knee. When discussing footwear options by email, someone suggested a practical black, closed toe shoe. We all owned a pair, after all. It was all so illegal my head almost exploded. I had to shut my laptop and walk away, otherwise I would have been shouting in all caps about how we might as well wear those black lace up sneakers they sell at the chemist that are extra wide to accommodate diabetes-related foot swelling. BLASPHEMY. In the end, the bride won and we all wore pale gold.

Thankfully I can put that episode behind me and focus my efforts on important things. Like trawling the collections for good shoes to post on my blog.

For the last few seasons, shoes seem to have been becoming more and more avant-garde. Many are downright weird. There is the ankle boot, and the strappy, sometimes bondage-esque platform shoe, there are strange interpretations of the heel (or in Antonio Berardi’s case, the heel is removed altogether and replaced with…air), eccentric embellishments and the always practical boot with the toe missing, (which, by the way, I LOVE).

Anyway, here are some of my favourite shoes from the Spring collections:

I love the first Phillip Lim pair, but they don’t seem very Spring to me. I can imagine them with opaque tights, a ridiculously short skirt and a fluffy fur, real or faux.

Am I crazy? I die for these mechanical robot-looking booties from Alexander McQueen. They’re so unique, and as long as your outfit was fairly toned down, I don’t think they’d look that weird. (According to the Boyfriend, the style of these booties is based on a fiction genre called Steampunk)

I also die for these shoes from Burberry, especially the knotted pair with the black platform soles. Not everyone does the socks and heels thing, but I think they really suit the knotted and tangled look that Christopher Bailey has going on at Burberry this season.

If I were to carve a love message into a tree right now it would read “Grace hearts Costume Jewelery”. Sorry The Boyfriend, but I’m a fickle woman. Maybe if you were more sparkly, it would be your name on that tree.

Here are a few of my favourite pieces. You’ll have to excuse the funny shadows. I’m not the most talented photographer in the world, and I don’t have any fancy lights, so I have to depend on old fashioned equipment like “the sun” and “going outside”. I had to climb out my bedroom window onto the tin roof of our apartment building, distribute my weight carefully so as not to (1) dent said tin roof, and (2) not sit my butt into the thick layer of red dust coating the roof from the crazy dust storm we had in Sydney last week. Sometimes I wonder if there is anything more amazing than living in a big city and having no outside space.

This chunky, colourful beaded necklace was a gift from The Boyfriend a few years ago. He got it at a shop called Bernstein & Gold in Victoria Canada. I love the busy mix of saturated, bright colours and the interesting choice of beads. I wear it to work with a crisp, white, collared shirt, but I think it would look equally sharp with a midnight blue silk top, or a light coloured scoop neck t-shirt. Unfortunately I’ve forgotten the name of the designer. Shame on me.

I just got this fantastic sparkly necklace at JCrew when I was in Seattle earlier this month. It was a bargain at around $70. I can tie the chain in a knot at the back to make the necklace a bit shorter. The beads are a weird sort of non-colour; they could be olive green or grey, but they also pick up the light and colour from whatever I’m wearing, and morph, chameleon-like, to complement the outfit.

This white and gold cuff was also a gift from The Boyfriend and also came from Bernstein & Gold in Victoria. And what do you know, I can’t remember the designer’s name for this one either. Double shame. It’s made of white marble, gold and citrine.

090927_Marble_Bracelet_1

I adore this weird minty-green brooch that my mom and I found in an antique store in Victoria a few years ago. Upper Fort St. downtown is full of these neat little antique stores that sell shoes for teensy feet, corsets for teensy waists, and amazing jewelery. Notice the creepy little frog sitting on a petal, minding its own business. Also notice how in this photo the shadow looks like Batman’’s head. It’’s a double whammy of subtle weirdness. Like WHAM. And then again, WHAM. You didn’t think I was going to do it, but I totally did.

090927_Green_Brooch_1

This is a silver collar I got at a store on Crown St. in Surry Hills called Mrs. Red & Sons. Their website only gives a phone number, but the store is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. They’ve got a giant red door at the front, which opens into a lovely little shop full of jewelery and homewares, most of which have an Asian bent. This piece is by a designer in Western Australia named Susan Pender. The collar is sterling silver and the fish ornament is freshwater pearl and coral. I love this necklace because it’s striking when worn with a plain top, but you can also remove the ornament to wear the collar alone with a printed top or dress.

090927_Fish_Collar_1

This necklace belonged to my grandma, who brought it to Canada from the Philippines. I don’t know much about it except that it’s super cool.

090927_Gma_Chain_Necklace_2

I was so excited when my mom and I found this peacock brooch in a shop called Chapel Street Bazaar in Melbourne.  Each piece of its tail is connected separately, so the tail swishes when I move around. The Bazaar is in a massive space at 217 Chapel St, Prahran and it’s chock-a-block with vintage clothing, jewelery, shoes, and heaps of other flotsam and jetsam. What a fabulous place to spend a few hours drinking in the wares.

090927_Peacock_Brooch_1

This pewter flower also belonged to my grandma. I think the cross-hatching texture on the petals is genius. It takes something that’s soft and reflective and makes it rough and almost industrial.

090927_Pewter_Flower_Brooch_1

I got this cool vintage gold-tone bangle at the Glebe Markets on the weekend.

090927_Gold_Tone_Bangle_1

Finally, this is a bangle that my friends gave me for my birthday last year. I love how everything reflected in it looks like liquid. It’s such a unique piece that I wasn’t sure what it was at first, and I had some trouble figuring out how to wear it because it sits quite high off my wrist. Looking at it today though, I had a brainwave. I’m going to pick up some heavy chain or ribbon and try wearing it as a mid-length necklace. Sometimes I ask my friends how they can stand being around someone who has such clever ideas all the time. They just look at me, laugh and pat me on the head. I think they’re jealous.
